Constituent Spotlight: Phil Garofalo

May 14, 2015

Philip F. Garofalo lives on the 3800 block of N. Osceola. A software engineer, he has both a bachelor's degree from Illinois State University and a master's from DePaul. His family has lived in the same house since his parents bought it in 1981, and have been in Dunning/Belmont Heights area for over 33 years.

Phil swims with the Shabbona Sharks swim club, an organization which has been holding daily swim sessions since the early seventies, and which he joined around 2000. Like many residents, whenever Phil has a project, he signs up for Joe Klosterman's woodcraft classes at Shabbona Park. Joe's well known in the community and his shop is a great resource.

Phil believes the strongest communities have strong organizations, and it’s something he thinks Dunning has lacked over the years. It’s one of the major reasons he feels the Dunning Neighborhood Organization is such a positive development, and has been why he’s been active with the local group since its inception. Phil hopes that the banner program, which the DNO initiated and Phil has been vitally active in, is just the beginning of an effort to beautify and improve the business and living spaces along Harlem Avenue. We commend Phil on his hard work to make our area more attractive, vital, walkable and desirable!
